Frequently asked questions
How do I use Word Counter?
1. Add your text: Paste or type your content into the Your text box. 2. Watch the counts update: Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update as you type. There is nothing to press. 3. Use the figures: Check the reading and speaking times to judge length, or press Copy to take the word and character count with you.
How are words counted?
Every run of characters between spaces or line breaks counts as one word, so hyphenated terms, numbers and URLs count as one each. Languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, come out as very few words.
How are characters and sentences counted?
Characters include spaces and line breaks, and a second figure leaves all spaces out. Sentences are counted from full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, plus a final sentence without end punctuation, so abbreviations and decimal numbers can add extra sentences.
How are reading and speaking times worked out?
Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, rounded to the nearest minute. Very short texts show under 1 min. Real speed depends on the reader and the text.
Where is my text processed?
In your browser. The text is counted on your device as you type and is never sent to GigaTools or any other service.
