Frequently asked questions

How do I use Email Privacy?

1. Enter the Email address: Type a complete address such as [email protected]. It has to be a valid email format. 2. Press Run Email Privacy: The GigaTools server keeps the first character of the part before the @, and the last one for longer names, and replaces the rest with asterisks. 3. Copy the masked text or the link: Copy the masked text, such as j************[email protected], or the HTML link, which shows the masked text but still opens your real address.

What exactly is hidden?

Everything before the @ except the first and, for names of five or more characters, the last character is replaced with one asterisk per character. Short names get at least three asterisks. The domain after the @ stays fully visible.

Is the masked address still a working email link?

The masked text is not: it cannot receive mail. The separate HTML link opens your real address when clicked, while showing only the masked text.

Does it stop spam bots from finding my address?

It helps against simple bots. In the HTML link, every character of the real address is written as an HTML character code, which basic scrapers do not read as an email address. Advanced bots can still decode it, and the real address must not appear elsewhere on the page in plain text.

Is my email address sent anywhere else?

The address is sent to the GigaTools server, masked there and returned on the same page. It is not passed to any third-party service.
