Frequently asked questions

How do I use YouTube Thumbnail Downloader?

1. Paste the YouTube URL: Use a watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed or live link, or just the 11-character video ID, in the YouTube URL field. 2. Press Run YouTube Thumbnail Downloader: The GigaTools server picks the video ID out of the link without contacting YouTube. 3. Open or save a thumbnail: The result shows the thumbnail in five sizes, from 1280 × 720 down to 120 × 90. Open a size and save the picture from your browser.

Where does the thumbnail come from?

From YouTube’s own image server. The tool builds addresses such as https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg; GigaTools does not copy or host the images. Thumbnails belong to the video owner, so check the rights before reusing one.

Which sizes are available?

Five: maximum resolution (1280 × 720), standard (640 × 480), high (480 × 360), medium (320 × 180) and small (120 × 90). The maximum resolution exists only for videos uploaded in HD.

Which links does it recognise?

Watch links with v=, youtu.be links, and Shorts, embed and live links, as well as a bare 11-character video ID.

Does YouTube see that I used the tool?

Your link goes to the GigaTools server, which only extracts the ID. When the result appears, your browser loads the image directly from img.youtube.com, so YouTube receives that image request.
