How do I use Hash Generator?

Which algorithms are supported?
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512. All four are calculated from the same input every time; there is no HMAC, salt or file option.
Why does my hash differ from another tool?
The text is hashed exactly as you enter it, as UTF-8 and including leading and trailing spaces. Line breaks are hashed as LF (\n), as most tools and shells do. Another tool may add a trailing newline or use CRLF line breaks, which changes the digest completely.
Should I use these hashes for passwords?
No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes, and even fast SHA-2 hashes are unsuitable for storing passwords. Use a slow algorithm such as bcrypt or Argon2 in your application instead.
Is my text sent to the server?
Yes. The text is submitted to the GigaTools server, hashed there with PHP and returned; the tool does not store it. Do not hash real passwords or production secrets here.
