What does the validator check?
It checks for well-formed XML, a urlset or sitemapindex root element and loc values that are absolute http or https URLs. It also counts entries and duplicate URLs, and lists up to five parser errors when the XML is broken.
What does it not check?
It does not validate against the sitemap schema, check lastmod dates or namespaces, open child sitemaps or visit the listed URLs. Whether each page responds, is canonical and is indexable needs a separate check.
Can I validate a sitemap by its URL?
No. Paste the XML itself; the tool does not download files, so unpack a compressed .gz sitemap first. After publishing, Google Search Console shows how Google read your submitted sitemap.
Is my sitemap stored?
The XML is sent to the GigaTools server, parsed with network access disabled, and the result is returned without being saved.
