FAQ

Good to know

How do I use Sitemap Comparison Tool?

1. Paste the before and after XML: Use two urlset sitemaps or two sitemap indexes of the same type. 2. Choose the matching rule: Default matching uses exact trimmed loc strings. Path-only mode compares pathname and query while ignoring origin. 3. Review changes: Inspect added and removed entries. Copy or download the report; child sitemaps and live URLs are not fetched.

Does removed mean deleted or deindexed?

No. It means the URL is absent from the second supplied sitemap. Check the live URL and indexing separately.

Can I compare sitemap indexes?

Yes, but only their direct child sitemap references. The tool does not open children. Both inputs must use the same root type.

What are the limits and matching rules?

Up to 1 MB and 5000 entries per input. Duplicate keys are counted and compared once. Exact mode preserves URL case, trailing slashes, queries and fragments. Path-only mode ignores origin and fragment; inspect its collisions. Metadata such as lastmod is not compared.
